Manu Dibango – Dibango 82 (Remastered Vinyl)
Dibango 82, a previously unreleased live recording of Manu Dibango recorded in Marseille in the early 1980s. The African legend, accompanied by his eight musicians, mixes funk, jazz, and African rhythms on classics such as "Africa Boogie" and "Waka Juju." The album, produced with INA and Dibango's label, Soul Makossa, captures Manu at his peak. Manu Dibango, who passed away five years ago at the age of 86, is one of the pillars of African music alongside Fela, Miriam Makeba, and Youssou N'Dour. Over a career spanning six decades, Dibango revolutionized the continent's music, with the added bonus of a worldwide hit with "Soul Makossa" in 1972. This live album, recorded in 1982, comes at a crucial time when France, following the election of François Mitterrand, was discovering its multicultural sensibility. With the rise of FM radio stations like Radio Nova, the French music scene suddenly opened up to new horizons. The "Sono Mondiale" was born. Recorded on December 22, 1982 at the Théâtre La Criée in Marseille, Dibango 82 delivered a superb concert mixing African rhythms, jazz and funk, and some Latin influences, led by Dibango accompanied by a dream cast: Congolese guitarist Jerry "Bokilo" Malekani, drummer Brice Wassy, percussionist Valery Lobe, as well as Jean-Pierre Coco on percussion, Hary Gofin on bass, Malagasy pianist Del Rabenja, and the two backing singers Florence "Titty" Dimbeng and Sissy Dipoko. Remastered from the original tapes, the album features liner notes by Graeme Ewens and concert organizer Christian Ducasse, with a cover photo by cult African music photographer Bill Akwa Bétotè.
