The Durutti Column – Vini Reilly (2026 Reissue Vinyl)
The Durutti Column's Vini Reilly first appeared in 1989, deep into Vini Reilly's run as one of Factory Records' most singular artists, and it still sounds like a record pushing outward. Produced by Stephen Street, it pairs Reilly's delicate, instantly recognisable guitar lines with a broader palette of sampling, ambient space and understated pop structure, giving the album a richer, more expansive character than much of the group's earlier work.
What makes this one last is the balance between intimacy and experiment. Fragile melodic figures, sparse piano and subtle rhythmic details sit beside looping textures and vocal fragments, while guest players help open the sound without diluting Reilly's touch. AllMusic notes that the album marked "another new phase" for the band through its embrace of sampler technology, and that feels exactly right: the music stays emotionally direct even as the machinery becomes part of the composition.
Tracks such as Love No More and Otis remain among the band's best-known pieces, but the album works especially well as a whole, moving between introspective instrumentals and quietly strange pop. For this 2026 London edition, the 1989 album returns as a standard black-vinyl pressing after the 35th-anniversary Record Store Day release and CD box set, with vinyl mastering by Peter Beckmann at Technology Works and the original sleeve restored.
