Olivia Dean is a young Englishwoman with all the charm of the great soul singers. Her four EPs, released in quick succession between 2019 and 2021, have paved the way for this debut album; a classy, heartfelt blend of pop, R&B and soul with a hint of jazz. London's iconic Jazz Café made no mistake in welcoming her (accompanied by saxophone, trumpet and trombone) for her first live performance, recorded in 2021. As did Arte Concert, which programmed her as one of the young talents at the 7th edition of its festival in 2022, alongside her compatriot Loyle Carner and Iceland's JFDR.
There's nothing messy about Messy - on the contrary, there's nothing to throw away. The Londoner of Jamaican and Guyanese origins radiates raw talent throughout these 12 tracks that finish much too soon. From Slowly and Everybody's Crazy’s solemn piano-vocals to the sensitive R&B ballad I Could Be a Florist; from the brassy flights in the excellent single Dive to Ladies Room’s funk jolts and the soft, synthesised ambience of Messy overall, Olivia Dean's warm voice, which she modulates to her heart's content, moves with perplexing ease. Although in a British music scene already saturated with the likes of Joy Crookes, Cleo Sol and Jorja Smith, the 24 year old Olivia Dean, with a style she can truly call her own, has managed to claim her own seat at the table.
